Garbage Disposal Clogs | Billy the Sunshine Plumber

If you have problems with a clogging garbage disposal, call Billy the Sunshine Plumber for help.

You took some time off this morning to play a bit of tennis at Delta Woods Park. When you got home, you fixed a cup of coffee and went back to your kitchen-improvement project. You bought your home with its outdated kitchen a couple of years ago and now you’re finally getting around to updating things from the floor on up to the ceiling fixtures and everything in between.

Right now, you’re just in the beginning stages of trying to decide what you want from the type of counter top to the appliances. One of the appliances you want to add is a garbage disposal. You’ve been missing that since you moved in. While you were looking at garbage disposals, you stumbled over something called a “batch-feed” garbage disposal. It was something you’d never heard of before but now you’re considering installing one.

You’re not the only person who has never heard of a batch-feed disposal. Consumer Reports says most people know about and have continuous-feed disposals. To use a continuous-feed disposer, according to Consumer Reports, “you flip a switch to whirr it into motion and (with cold water running) toss in food scraps as it grinds. Often, that switch is wired into the wall above the sink.”

The problem is the wiring. In older homes that aren’t already wired for a disposal, that means installing the switch and rewiring to activate a continuous-feed disposal. In a batch-feed disposal, the start/stop is in the disposal itself and is activated when you press down on the lid.

Batch-feed disposals have several advantages from greater safety because they won’t run if the lid isn’t on them to being quieter to run and perfect for kitchen islands. But they also have some disadvantages including higher costs, potential inconvenience if you lose the lid, and a greater incidence of clogs.

Consumer Reports quotes Eric Schultz, director of product management at InSinkErator, saying, With a batch-feed disposal, you’re processing a large load of food all at once so you need to be careful not to overload the hopper. And if you have older pipes that are more constricted, you might have to be a little bit more careful.”

If you do get a clog – in either a batch-feed or continuous-feed disposal – the person to call for help is Billy the Sunshine Plumber.
