Not Down the Drain | Billy the Sunshine Plumber

Even if you’re careful about the things you toss in the kitchen sink, you can still get a clog. If so, call the drain cleaning experts at Billy the Sunshine Plumber.

Because it’s Saturday, you decided to cook a hearty brunch after you got back from biking along the Pinellas Trail. You started off frying bacon then went on to the eggs and other items on the menu. It was delicious but it left you with a clean up issue – what do you do with the grease? You know you shouldn’t pour grease of any kind down the drain. But just what do you do with used grease?

Mydomain.com offers several suggestions.

Among those suggestions – re-use it.

“You can reuse frying oil a few times on average … just let it cool completely at room temperature, strain it through a coffee filter or cheese cloth into an airtight container, and keep it stored in a cool, dark place until you’re ready to fry again,” mydomain says. “Any oil used to deep-fry is the perfect candidate for saving, but oils used to sear things like meat at high temperatures are not—they’re already ‘spent,’ and it’s likely that you didn’t use enough to really make it worth the effort. If you shallow fry things like garlic, shallots, or onions and don’t need that cooking oil for the recipe, definitely strain and it save for later use—it would be great in a vinaigrette but could also be reused as the base oil for a simple curry or homemade mayonnaise.”

If you can’t re-use it. Or if you don’t like the idea of re-using it, then you can throw it out.

“Simply let it cool completely at room temperature and pour it into a resealable, disposable container before popping it into the trash. Do not pour it directly into the trash bag (especially if it’s hot) and do not pour it into the toilet,” mydomain says. “If you’d rather not throw it out with a container that could otherwise be recycled, don’t worry, you’ve got options. Depending on how much oil you have, you could let it cool, then use paper towels to soak it up before throwing the soaked towels away or cool it in the fridge until it hardens, then use a spoon to scoop the hardened oil directly into the trash.”

Or, if you have a cat, you can dump it in the kitty litter and then immediately throw the kitty litter away. Just don’t let the kitty get in the greasy litter.

Even if you’re really careful, sometimes you’ll get a slow drain or an outright clog that you can’t clear yourself. If that happens to you, then it’s time to call the Tampa Bay drain cleaning technicians at Billy the Sunshine Plumber.
