You’ve always been told never to leave the house when your washing machine is running. This morning, you found out why. You put in a load of dirty clothes before you went to walk the dog but refrained from turning on the washer before leaving the house.

You turned it on when you got back and got a big mess. The washer drained but water poured out of the drain tube behind the machine.

Although, as thespruce.com says, it can be tricky to diagnose the cause when a washing machine becomes clogged, it sounds as if it is a traditional drain clog.

“Because small fabric fibers routinely are flushed through the system, it’s common for drain clogs to occur in the plumbing pipes into which the washing machine drains,” according to thesrpuce.com. “A clogged drain causes water to back up into the standpipe and spill on the floor. Clearing the clogged drain will usually resolve the problem. ”

How difficult that is to do depends on whether the clog is in the trap area near the machine or farther down the line. You can determine which location is the likeliest by turning on the machine and waiting for it fill then overflow. If it overflows quickly – in a few seconds – after filling, then the clog is likely in the trap area. If it takes longer, then the clog is farther down the line.
