Stone Crab Season Has Arrived | Billy the Sunshine Plumber

Garbage disposal all gummed up? Clog you can’t get rid of? It’s time to call Billy the Sunshine Plumber.

This weekend holds good news for all you crab lovers out there. Stone crab season opens Saturday (Oct.15) and remains open until May 1, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation department. According to the department, “Traps may be placed in the water 10 days prior to the opening of the season, but once placed, you may not tend to the traps until the start of the season, at which time you may begin harvesting.”

The FWC, of course, has lots of information about what’s legal and what isn’t and what you can use to harvest the claws. But the site misses one precaution – don’t dump the shells, or pieces of shells, down your drain or expect your garbage disposal to get rid of the crab debris.

“Hard shells from seafood such as crab, lobster, shrimp and oysters are a common garbage disposal problem. Many of these shells are far too dense to grind up properly, while the ones that might slip through (like shrimp) have a chance to catch in the drain,” familyhandyman.com explains. “So skip the garbage disposal and drop the shells in the trash, preferably a small trash bag so that you can take it out of the kitchen immediately. There’s no point in having to clean the whole kitchen just to get rid of a bad smell!”

But, let’s face it, accidents do happen and sometimes inappropriate things get put inn the disposal. When that happens and you need help, it’s time to call Billy the Sunshine Plumber.
