Your washing machine may appear to have a leak when it’s actually clogged.

You had planned a weekend going out and about – kayaking, hiking, biking. But that all changed when Tropical Storm 19, now called Sally, formed and decided to dump tons of rain accompanied by some gusty winds on Tampa Bay as it makes its way across the Gulf.

Instead, you find yourself doing load after load of laundry. Or, you did, until you thought you heard water flowing and went into the laundry area to find water spilling out of the back of the machine. You assume your washing machine is leaking.

You might be right. One or more of your hoses could be cracked or broken, or there might be another reason for your washer to leak. But, it could also be a clog.

“If water is successfully pumping out of the machine but is then spilling out of the drain stand tube or backing up in the washtub, then the problem is likely a traditional drain clog,” thespruce.com says. “Because small fabric fibers routinely are flushed through the system, it’s common for drain clogs to occur in the plumbing pipes into which the washing machine drains. A clogged drain causes water to back up into the standpipe and spill on the floor. Clearing the clogged drain will usually resolve the problem.”

You can determine how far the clog is in the system by filling the washing machine with water and then putting it on spin to drain it. Then keep one hand on your shut off dial and your eyes on the drain pipe. And if it only takes a few seconds for the water to start flowing from the pipe, then the clog is likely close. And can be cleared with a small, power-driven snake. But, if it takes longer, then the clog is farther down in the system and you will need a larger snake to clear it.
