Cooking oils and grease will create clogs in your plumbing system. Find another way to dispose of grease and oil.

You spent the morning having a bicycle ride at Lake Townsen Park only to return to a clogged kitchen sink. You worked at it for awhile and eventually got things moving again but you’re afraid you didn’t solve the problem in the long run.

Clogs in kitchen sinks can be persistent because of all the food stuff and grease that get dumped into the sink. One of the most problematic is cooking oil. Not only does it work to create blockages and clogs in plumbing, it leaves homeowners with the question of how to get rid of used cooking oil if you don’t dump it in the sink. And dumping it in your trash can attract pests and damage your home.

Insider.com offers three ways to dispose of used cooking oil:

  • Contain and toss – “Containing and then throwing out cooking oil with the regular trash is a common and viable method for disposing of oil. After cooking, allow the oil to cool and then put it in a tightly sealed container.”
  • Store and reuse – “If the oil has only been used once, you can clean, store, and reuse it in cooking. This stretches the life of oil before it’s inevitably disposed of. First, clean the cooled oil by straining it through a filter. … After straining multiple times …  put the oil in a clean, airtight container and store it in the fridge. Never store used oil stored at room temperature, as it will spoil quickly. Properly stored, refrigerated cooking oil will last 30 days.”
  • Take the oil to a recycling center.

No matter how careful you are, you could still find you have clogs or blockages. If you can clear them yourself, that’s good. But if you find one you can’t handle, then it’s time to call Billy the Sunshine Plumber for help.
