Just Because It's Liquid Doesn't Mean It Can Go Down the Drain | Billy the Sunshine Plumber

Just because something is in liquid form does not mean it should be tossed into your home’s drains.

Temptation. Yes, it can be so tempting when you need to dispose of something that’s in liquid form to just pour it down your drain. It’s so much easier than finding a different way to dispose of it. And it can be quicker than finding another way to get rid of it – especially if you’re late to work or to meeting friends for a bike ride on the Pinellas Trail.

But no matter how tempting, you should not give in. Some liquids – grease, for example – can solidify once they get into the drainage system and cause a clog. Or things like grease can cling to the sides of pipes, causing other things to stick and eventually forming a clog.

Other things, like cough syrups and other liquid medicines, might not cause a clog but they can make their way out of your home and contaminate the environment. The same goes for chemicals and pesticides, according to realsimple.comPaint is another liquid that should stay out of your drains.

“Depending upon how much leftover paint you have, there are a few options for safe disposal—but pouring it down the drain is not one of them!” realsimple.com says. “If it’s a small amount, simply open up the lid and allow the paint to dry out before throwing it away (note: don’t do this indoors, to avoid fumes). But if you have half a can left, try mixing it with kitty litter and allowing it to dry, turning it into a solid before disposing of it. If you have many gallons of paint, contact your local Hazardous Household Waste collection center.”

Of course, life isn’t perfect and sometimes you end up dumping grease, oil, or other bad substances down the drain. If you do and you end up with a slow drain or a clog you can’t dislodge, then it’s time to call Billy the Sunshine Plumber for help.
