Let's Talk About Pumpkin Pie | Tampa Bay Plumbing Clog

Drains or garbage disposal clogged with vegetable debris? Billy the Sunshine Plumber can help.

It’s your favorite time of year and you’re getting ready for a big Thanksgiving blow out. You walked through the Saturday Morning Market looking for goodies that will come in handy when people drop in. After that, you headed to the vegetable stand to buy a pumpkin. You’ve decided to be adventurous this year and bake a pumpkin pie from scratch. You figure you can toast the seeds for snacks.

That sounds like fun as well as being a culinary adventure. But don’t turn your culinary experiment into a plumbing nightmare. In other words, don’t toss your pumpkin debris – peels, strings and so forth – down the drain or expect the garbage disposal to take care of it.

Pumpkin seeds and the stringy pulp will harden and stick to pipes. The stringy pulp will tangle up garbage disposals and the hard outer shell can damage the blades. And, by the way, it isn’t just pumpkins, all stringy vegetables pose a threat to your garbage disposal.

A plumbing expert consulted by Consumer Reports explains: “Celery, corn husks, artichokes, edamame pods, asparagus, and rhubarb are also problematic. ‘Premium garbage disposals with multi-grind technology can handle fibrous foods in small amounts, … But stringy materials tend to go through most garbage disposals and ball up in your plumbing, causing clogs.

“As counterintuitive as it seems, fruit and vegetable peels can cause similar problems, especially if you cram a bunch into the disposal at once. ‘Individual peels are very thin and don’t have much heft to them, so they can actually slip through the grates. …  And they can cause clogs in the same way that fibrous vegetables do.'”

If you do get a clog or your garbage disposal fails, then it’s time to call the trusted local plumbers at Billy the Sunshine Plumber.
