When you have a new baby on the way, you need to baby proof your home – that includes the plumbing. Billy the Sunshine Plumber is here to help.
You got up early this morning to take a peaceful walk on Caladesi Island. It’s so hot you’d rather stay inside, but, now that you’re expecting a baby, you’re trying to make sure you walk or do other exercise every day for the little one’s sake. You’ve been amazed at how much your life has changed and you know it will change more once the baby arrives.
You’ve also been baby proofing your home – making sure little fingers can’t stick themselves into electric outlets and getting locks for cabinets doors. But did you know you should also baby proof your bathroom?
“In fact, the bathroom can pose serious dangers to a baby and toddler,” Bynum Plumbing of Lilburn, GA, points out. “Water that is too hot from your faucets can scald your child, slippery surfaces can cause bad falls, and bathtub drowning is a realistic concern. Did you know that only 1 inch of water in the bathtub or toilet can be a drowning hazard?”
Bynum has these tips for baby proofing your bathroom and reducing the possibility of an injury:
- Adjust your water heater to below 120 degrees Fahrenheit
- Invest in a toilet lid lock
- Install child-proof latch on bathroom door
- Cover faucets with burn-prevention devices
- Place anti-slip mats in your tub and shower
- Wipe up water spills immediately to reduce falls
- Use Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) to prevent risk of electrocution
- Never leave a young child alone in the bath tub or shower
Most of these are things parents can do for themselves, but if you need help from a plumber – for example, you want an anti-scald device or GFCI installed – or if you find something wrong with your plumbing while baby proofing your home, you may need help or guidance from a plumber like those at Billy the Sunshine Plumber.
