New Year's Promises | Billy the Sunshine Plumber

Keep plumbing problems to a minimum in 2021 by resolving to perform preventive plumbing maintenance. Billy the Sunshine Plumber can help.

You had a low-key New Year’s Eve by staying home to watch virtual celebrations from around Tampa Bay and the world. Yesterday, you went for a walk on Gulfport Beach and spent some time just sitting and staring at the water. Not only was it peaceful and mind-clearing, it gave you a chance to contemplate other things. Things like, should you even bother to make a list of New Year’s Resolutions?

You’ve made many such New Year’s promises during your life. Like most people, you’ve let those promises (weight loss, getting fit) go after a couple of weeks. The whole idea of New Year’s Resolutions has become something of a joke.

We get it. We’re not losing weight or getting fit either no matter how much we intend to stick to those goals. But, there are some goals that can benefit you and that you can stick to. Once such is to regularly inspect your home’s plumbing to catch any problems before they become major.

When plumbing problems erupt suddenly, they can do so with a severity that borders on the catastrophic. But a regular inspection of your key plumbing fixtures can help you spot and correct developing problems before they become such emergencies,” thespruce.com says.

The best part of this goal is that, while you can do it, you don’t have to. You can just call Billy the Sunshine Plumber to do the checking.

Clearly, the main focus of your plumbing check should be the bathroom, kitchen and sewer system. But, if you’re doing the checking, don’t forget the rest of your home – water heater, shutoff valves, sump pumps, outdoor hose spigots, irrigation system, washing machine and water pressure.

What should you look for during that inspection? In the bathroom, pay attention to faucets, drains, toilets and caulk seals. In the kitchen, take a look at drains, faucets, shutoff valves, garbage disposal, dishwasher and refrigerator.

“If you have a septic system with a drain field (common in rural areas) avoid problems by having the system inspected and serviced regularly. With a tank system, have the tank pumped out whenever it becomes full. For drainage field systems, make sure your family knows what kinds of materials should not go down the drain,” thespruce.com says.

Thespruce.com adds, “If your house is served by municipal sewer lines, prevent mainline blockages through regular maintenance. For homes that see periodic stoppages, usually caused by tree roots in the sewer lines, an annual snaking of the line by a professional sewer service will prevent floor drains from backing up into the home. You can evaluate the effectiveness of the sewer line by emptying all sinks and tubs at the same time and seeing if a floor drains back up or if it takes a long time for all the drains to empty.”

Don’t forget the vent pipes, which “equalize air pressure and vent sewer gases.”

Thespruce.com explains, “These pipes usually exit through the top of your roof, and if they become blocked with debris or snow and ice, the drain system in your house will not work as effectively. During your tour of the plumbing system, visually inspect the vent pipes extending through your roof for signs of blockage. You will likely have several of these vent pipes in your roof—one for each main soil stack, and often secondary vent pipes, as well.”

It does sound like a lot, but a periodic inspection can help avoid a plumbing emergency. And, the best part is that you don’t have to do it. If you don’t feel up to it  or you simply want to hand off the task to a professional, then do so by calling the 24-hour plumbing experts at Billy the Sunshine Plumber.
