Not in the Garbage Disposal | Billy the Sunshine Plumber

Scallop shells should be put in the trash, not the garbage disposal.

One of the joys of living in Florida is the availability of fresh seafood and shellfish. For example, it’s bay scallop season in Pasco, Citrus and Hernando counties right now. Cue the grill for a barbecue and cookout.

That’s all good. But the down side is getting rid of the shells once you finish feasting on shellfish.

The Florida Wildlife Commission has this to say about disposing of scallop shells: “Please do not discard scallop shells in inshore waters commonly used for recreational activities such as the Homosassa River or Crystal River. Piles of discarded scallop shells can create hazards for swimmers and damage seagrass habitat. Scallop shells can be discarded in a trash receptacle or in larger bodies of water where they are more likely to disperse.”

The FWC forgets one warning – don’t put the shells down your garbage disposal or you risk damaging it. If they make it through your garbage disposal, they can also gum up your plumbing.

“Eggshells are another common throwaway food that [people] say they put into the garbage disposal,” according to consumerreports.org. “Seems harmless enough, but they don’t decompose quickly and a large amount of them accumulate and stop up the drain, especially if you’ve got older pipes. The same goes for shellfish and coffee grounds, which don’t break down easily and are also quite oily—a double whammy.”

Of course, things happen and sometimes something unwanted slips into the disposal. If that happens and you need help, call the trusted plumbers at Billy the Sunshine Plumber.
