If your business has been closed for the past few weeks, be sure to check your water system before you reopen.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Friday that the state is entering “full Phase 1” of reopening after several weeks of safer-at-home orders. That means, among other thing, gyms will be allowed to reopen starting Monday (May 18). Restaurants and retailers, who are currently allowed to operate at 25 percent capacity, will be allowed to operate at 50 percent capacity.
Reopening is more than just unlocking the doors. The city of Oldsmar’s utilities department is reminding business owners and operators to “freshen up their water systems. Stagnant water conditions can result in discolored water, lower chlorine levels, and higher concentrations of lead and copper.”
Oldsmar notes the CDC guidelines for freshening a water system include flushing the system with fresh water, cleaning all fixtures and decorative water features, ensuring the water heater is set to at least 120°F, and making sure all safety equipment (fire sprinklers, eyewash stations, etc) are properly maintained.
While you’re doing that, check for leaks and other possible issues with your plumbing system. Make sure the toilet flushes. And make sure the drains are clear.
