Shower Clog | Billy the Sunshine Plumber

Whether you have a clog in your shower, sink, or elsewhere, Billy the Sunshine Plumber is here to help you.

You decided to get out for a long bike ride on the Withlacoochee State Trail the other day. When you got home, you hopped into the shower to rinse off. But, instead of having the water disappear down the drain, it pooled around your feet, then your ankles and, finally, partway up your calves.

Yes, your shower drain was clogged.

The culprit could be hair, but perhaps not. Apartmenttherapy.com says the fault could be the products you’re using in the shower. Those products can include beauty products, toothpaste, bath tub cleaners, and/or small things like bobby pins.

“Beauty products containing oil, such as bath bombs, are an issue,” apartmenttherapy.com says. “Epsom salt and baking soda are common ingredients that typically dissolve in water, but other common additives, including essential oils, cornstarch, cocoa butter, bits of flowers, and even glitter, don’t dissolve well. These additives leave behind residue that may stick to the inside of your pipes. … Oils often solidify as they cool, and cornstarch can harden in pipe elbows or curves as it dries. Over time, these deposits may collect soap, hair, and other substances, eventually leading to nasty clogs,”

Your best bet is to use products that dissolve in water, such as salt and sugar scrubs, body washes, shampoos and conditioners. Avoid the oily bath bombs and similar products.

As for toothpaste, it can harden in the pipe and cause a clog. That doesn’t generally happen in a sink drain or pipe because that gets more frequent use than the shower. Because you use the sink more often, the toothpaste gets flushed away and doesn’t have a chance to solidify and create a clog.

Apartmenttherapy.com says this about cleaning products: “Bleach and other harsh chemicals can harm your drain—and potentially your plumber who is working on it—so it’s always important to notify your plumber of any harsh chemicals you’ve put down your drain. Even drain cleaners typically recommended for fixing this exact problem can cause ‘permanent pipe damage’ if overused.”

Your best bet is an enzymatic cleaner to clear out drains and pipes. If that doesn’t work, it’s probably time to call a plumber for help.
