When your sewer line is clogged, call the drain cleaning pros at Billy the Sunshine Plumber for help.
Toilet habits are news these days. To be specific, public works officials in Pinellas County and elsewhere in the U.S. are coping with downside of “flushable” sanitary wipes. The problem – the wipes are not really flushable.
They are flushable to the extent that they’ll disappear from your toilet. But when they make their way into the sewer lines – yours or your city’s or county’s – they don’t dissolve. They build up and get stuck. The result is a giant clog.
Shea Dunifon of Pinellas County Utilities was quoted in a recent news story: “Our message to the public is only three things belong down the toilet; number 1, number 2 and toilet paper. Put those flushable wipes in the trash. … They are clogging our pipes and our pumps.”
The story points out that the situation is even worse in places like St. Petersburg that have aging sewer pipes because they aren’t equipped to handle the thicker material and have to use special equipment to clear the clogs.
The problem isn’t limited to Pinellas County. It’s a national issue. A group called Think Before You Flush even has a website devoted to letting folks know what it’s okay and not okay to flush.
“When the right things go down the toilet they are flushed away and start a journey through our wastewater treatment network travelling along pipes to a treatment plant where the waste is taken out and the water is treated and returned to rivers and the sea,” according to the Think Before You Flush website.
It adds, “But, when items are flushed down the toilet that should be put in the bin they cause problems in our homes, in the wastewater treatment network and at the wastewater treatment plant. These items stick together and block pipes and pumps, which can lead to flooding of homes and gardens. Some of these items also end up on our beaches.”
