“Substitute” toilet papers, like wet wipes can clog your toilet and sewer system. If you do get a clog, call the clog-clearing experts at Billy the Sunshine Plumber.
Anyone who has listened to the news or read anything on the internet the past week or so knows that there’s been a mad dash for toilet paper that has resulted in a temporary shortage. If you have toilet paper, congratulations. If you’re running short or are out of toilet paper, there are substitutions ranging from wet or sanitary wipes to paper towels or tissues. But all those substitutes have one major drawback – they’re NOT flushable and can clog up not only your home or office sewer system but also cause problems farther down the line for the city and/or county.
Pinellas County Utilities explains:
“As people prepare to stay home during the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, some household staples are getting stockpiled more zealously than others – toilet paper is one of the most highly coveted items. Pinellas County Utilities would like to advise all residents and partners of the community that while you may be using alternatives to toilet paper during this time, popular bathroom wipes and pre-moistened towelettes often advertised as ’flushable’ are heavily contributing to clogs and backups in our sanitary sewer system.
“Despite what their labeling may claim, ‘flushable’ wet wipes are wreaking havoc on our sewer system. Though they may technically go down when you flush, wet wipes do not easily break down. As they flow – intact – down your pipes and out to the street, they get caught; and a blockage and overflow occurs, sending raw sewage into your home, yard, or into waterways. This leads to costly repairs when you factor in the amount of time and money it costs to unclog pipes and pumps and to replace and repair equipment.
- “Remember to stick to the three Ps: Pee, Poop, and [toilet] Paper.
- “Do not flush objects down the toilet such as: wipes, diapers, feminine hygiene products, paper towels or dental floss.
- “Dispose of these items in your trash receptacles.
“Spread the word! Inform your friends and family of the dangers of flushing wipes down the drain.”
Of course, some times, no matter how much you try to keep from flushing non-flushables, it happens. And sometimes you get a clog. If you do get a clog that you can’t clear yourself, it’s time to call the clog-clearing, drain-cleaning specialists at Billy the Sunshine Plumber.
