That slow drain might be caused by a clogged plumbing vent rather than a clogged water or sewer pipe. Billy the Sunshine Plumber can help.
You were finalizing plans to go to the Halloween BASH with Monkeybone tomorrow night when you smelled it. A sewer like smell. But you can’t figure out where exactly it’s coming from.
It’s possible you have a clogged plumbing vent pipe. Hunker.com says every toilet and drain in a house is connected to its own vent pipe, which brings in air to help prevent water from getting stuck in the plumbing system. Sometimes the vent pipe becomes clogged with leaves or other debris or an animal has built a nest on top of it.
When that happens, hunker.com says, air can’t get into the system and as “water tries to flow, it creates suction behind it that stops it altogether. … You can usually hear this as a bubbling or gurgling sound coming from the drain. If the suction is strong enough, it draws all the water out of the trap, and since the water is the only thing blocking sewer gases, you’ll be able to smell those gases. Additionally, the blocked vent also causes water to move slowly, giving you the impression of a blocked drain.”
Sometimes you can clear the vent clog by climbing on the roof and using a hose to shoot water into the vent. But that doesn’t always work. And, some people don’t want to be crawling around on the roof. If that’s the case, you’re going to need a plumbing expert to clear the vent pipe clog.
