Watch What You Flush! | Billy the Sunshine Plumber

Disinfectant wipes can clog up your toilet and plumbing system. Billy the Sunshine Plumber can help.

It looks as if it’s about to storm so you’re not sure if you’re going to stick to your plan to walk around the St. Pete Pier this morning. It’s probably just as well. You really need to stay home and figure out what’s happening with your toilet. Recently, it seems to clog almost every time you use it.

It might surprise you to know that you’re not the only one. As the Covid-19 pandemic has drawn out, many homeowners are finding they have repeated toilet or sewer clogs. The problem – disinfectant wipes. The wipes – despite what their packaging might say – are not flushable. Instead, they clump when they get into your system and, well, clog up the works.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains: “EPA urges Americans to only flush toilet paper. Disinfecting wipes and other items should be properly disposed of in the trash, not the toilet. These wipes and other items do not break down in sewer or septic systems and can damage your home’s internal plumbing as well as local wastewater collection systems. As a result, flushing these wipes can clog your toilet and/or create sewage backups into your home or your neighborhood.

“Additionally, these wipes can cause significant damage to pipes, pumps, and other wastewater treatment equipment. Sewer backups can be a threat to public health and present a challenge to our water utilities by diverting resources away from the essential work being done to treat and manage our nation’s wastewater. Disinfecting wipes, baby wipes, and paper towels should NEVER be flushed.”

Of course, no matter how good you try to be about caring for your plumbing and only flushing the “correct” items, sometimes mistakes happen. And, sometimes, others in your household aren’t as diligent as you are about protecting the plumbing.

If that happens and you get a clog or blockage that you can’t clear up by yourself or that’s persistent, it’s time to call the trusted 14-hour Tampa Bay plumbers at Billy the Sunshine Plumber.
