If your tap water has a yellow or brown color and smells funny, it could be your water heater. Billy the Sunshine Plumber can help with that.
You’re looking forward to having a big Thanksgiving at your home tomorrow and then taking visiting family to the Blue Crab Festival on Saturday. Well, you were looking forward to it until your tap water turned a kind of yellowish brown color and started smelling funny. You’re not sure of the problem and you’re not sure how to fix it.
The problem could be your water heater.
Hunker.com explains, “As water heaters age, they collect mineral debris from the water, as well as corrosion from internal parts. This collects on the bottom of the tank, interfering with heating and water flow, turning the water yellow or brown and producing disagreeable odors. The tank will probably be making popping or crackling sounds as air trapped in the sediment escapes.”
The good news is that you don’t generally need to replace the water heater to solve the problem. You have to flush the tank by letting all the water drain out and allowing cold water to flow through it for several minutes, hunker.com says.
“In severe cases, it’s a good idea to fill the tank with water, pour in a gallon of vinegar and let it sit overnight to dissolve scale and rust,” hunker.com says. “Flush again the next day, then refill the tank and power it up. You should notice a big improvement.”
If that doesn’t work. Or if you don’t have the time or desire to flush the water heater yourself, then it’s time to call the Tampa Bay plumbing pros at Billy the Sunshine Plumber.
