A DIY Don't | Billy the Sunshine Plumber

Got a plumbing clog you can’t dislodge? Call Billy the Sunshine Plumber for help with that!

You’re looking forward to the Sanding Ovations festival at Treasure Island that starts later this week. You generally go at least twice – once to watch them carve the sculptures and once to see them in their finished glory.

You’re especially looking forward to it this year because you dabbled a bit with trying your own “sculpture” a couple of weeks ago. You had a hole in your wall and decided to try some DIY to seal it up. That turned out well, but you had some left over so you tried to do something artistic with the leftover joint compound. That didn’t turn out as well as you’d have liked, but now you’re thinking of taking a clay or sculpting class.

Before you get too carried away, a word of warning. DIY and artistic endeavors are great. But be careful with how you handle the leftovers. Whatever you do, do not rinse cement, grout, or joint compound down the drain. Any drain.

“Setting-type joint compound hardens by a chemical reaction and will set up even under water, so obviously if it settles in your drain you’re in for a rock-hard clog. Sand is another building product that is notoriously bad for drains. Sand is heavy and settles quickly in traps and pipes to form clogs that are difficult to remove,” according to familyhandyman.com. “To avoid these problems, never rinse setting compound, grout, mortar mix or concrete down the drain. Instead, save rinse water in a container until the solid materials settle out. Then decant the water in an out-of-the-way area in your yard, and dump the remaining sludge into your garbage can.”

If you do happen to rinse something bad down your drain and you get a clog that you can’t dislodge, call the helpful plumbing experts at Billy the Sunshine Plumber.
