Clogged pipes can do a lot of damage! Prevention is key. We suggest…..
Even though disposals are great for chopping up food debris in the sink, they are no match for grease and oil that can find its way into your pipes. We suggest you avoid putting any animal grease or vegetable oils down your drain.
Take action immediately if you accidentally pour grease or oil down the drain:
- Pour a pot of boiling hot water down the drain.
- Next, pour in a 1/2 cup of baking soda and let sit for a few minutes.
- Then, pour a mixture of 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup boiling water over the baking soda in the drain. cover the drain plug to keep reaction below the surface. Let sit for to 10 minutes. (This mixture works in the same way as a caustic cleaner, but is non-toxic and less corrosive.)
- Flush drain with another pot of boiling water
Bleach is a powerful, toxic substance that should be used carefully and properly. Pouring it down a drain IS NOT a proper use. Bleach can react with other substances in your plumbing, potentially releasing fumes, and further plugging up the system. Pouring bleach down your drain will do much more harm than good.
