Why Is My Water Pressure So Low? | Billy the Sunshine Plumber

There could be many reasons your water pressure is low. Billy the Sunshine Plumber is here to help.

You spent a good part of Saturday hiking the trails on the Aripeka Sandhills Preserve. When you got home, all you could think about was lounging in a warm tub with a glass of wine. And that’s what you did. But it took longer to get there than you expected because the water pressure in your home is so low that it seems to take forever to fill the tub.

Taking a long time to fill the tub or a sink is certainly one sign that your water pressure is low. Your next question is whether the pressure is low in just one fixture or all over the house.

“When only one fixture has low water pressure, it’s likely that the problem can be remedied if you just focus on fixing that one fixture or the pipes serving it. But widespread water pressure issues affecting the whole house indicate different problems,” thespruce.com says.

If your low water pressure is house-wide, there are several possible causes. First, is your shut off valve open? Second, is the water meter valve fully open? If those are open, then it’s time to move on to more serious causes: failing water pressure regulator and/or old steel water pipes.

“The most serious and potentially expensive reason for low water pressure occurs when old galvanized steel water pipes are corroded to the point that water flow is significantly restricted. These pipes corrode on the inside (so you usually can’t see the corrosion, but over time, the buildup of corrosion and scale gradually closes off the pipe,” thespruce.com says. “This problem develops over decades, so the reduction in water flow is very gradual; you will not notice a sudden drop in pressure. However, if you move into an old house with steel pipes, the pipes may have significant corrosion to start with and the problem may worsen relatively quickly.

“Unfortunately, the only solution for corroded pipes is to re-pipe the system with new copper or plastic water supply piping. It is the only way to solve the problem.”

If you have a problem with your water pressure regulator or your pipes, you’ll need a reliable plumbing pro like the trusted plumbers at Billy the Sunshine Plumber.
